About The Black Canyon

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is a United States National Park located in western Colorado, and managed by the National Park Service. There are two entrances to the park; the more-developed south rim entrance is located 15 miles (24 km) east of Montrose, while the north rim entrance is located 11 miles (18 km) south of Crawford and is closed in the winter. The park contains 12 miles (19 km) of the 48-mile (77 km) long canyon of the Gunnison river. The national park itself contains the deepest and most dramatic section of the canyon, but the canyon continues upstream into the Curecanti National Recreation Area and downstream into the Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area.

Precambrian

The Precambrian gneiss and schist that makes up the majority of the steep walls of the black canyon formed 1.7 billion years ago during a metamorphic period brought on by the collision of ancient volcanic island arcs with the southern end of what is present-day Wyoming. The lighter-colored pegmatite dikes that can be seen crosscutting the basement rocks formed during this period as well.

Geology

The Gunnison River drops an average of 34 feet per mile (5 m/km) through the entire canyon, making the 5th steepest mountain descents in North America. In comparison, the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon drops an average of 7.5 feet per mile (1.4 m/km). The greatest descent of the Gunnison River occurs in the park at Chasm View dropping 240 feet per mile (45 m/km). The Black Canyon is so named on account of its steepness which makes it difficult for sunlight to penetrate very far down the canyon. As a result, the canyon walls are most often in shadow, causing the rocky walls to appear black. At its narrowest point the canyon is only 40 feet (12 m) across at the river.
The extreme steepness and depth of the Black Canyon formed as the result of several geologic processes acting together. The Gunnison River is primarily responsible for carving the canyon, though several other geologic events had to occur in order to form the canyon as it is seen today.

The 35th Annual MARVAC Flint Camper & RV Show Is Coming to the Perani Arena & Event Center

February 27th, 2012-MARVAC, The Michigan Association of Recreation Vehicles and Campground, is sponsoring the 35th Annual Flint Camper & RV Show at the Perani Arena & Event Center on March 15-18, 2012. Over 90 new recreation vehicles will be on display including folding campers, travel trailers, motor homes  and fifth wheel travel trailers, prices range from $4,000 to $120,000. Special discounts include folding campers up to $4,000; trailers up to $10,000; and motor homes up to $46,000. Booths feature everything from parts and accessories, campground information, on site RV financing and RV rentals.

The 2012 RV & Campsite, the updated guide to camping in Michigan, will be available and free to consumers. Although this RV park did not have amenities and was very basic, we were happy to have it available. There is no other RV parking in the vicinity of Boulder. Since we wanted to visit our daughter there, we needed this play to stay. The management was friendly, but Wi-Fi only worked inside the building.

This place does not meet the standards of KOA. There was no pool, no trees (except tiny ones), and it was so close to the freeway you heard the big rigs all night long. Also, there were a number of awful speed bumps on the drive way in. It was a pain to drive our rig over them.

Picturesque Kanab, Utah, annually celebrates its part in the golden age of Western movies and television shows during the Western Legends Roundup, Aug. 18 to 20.

The three-day event includes a parade, street fair, shootouts, frontier skills demonstrations, Western entertainment, music, art show, quilt show, cowboy poetry, workshops, children’s events, a film festival and opportunities to mingle with those who worked in the movie industry.

Kanab is about 200 miles from Las Vegas on U.S. Highway 89. Follow Interstate 15 through St. George to the turnoff to Hurricane on State Route 9. From Hurricane, access Kanab either by continuing on Route 9 through Zion National Park to U.S. 89 and then south to Kanab or by turning in Hurricane onto Highway 59, which becomes Arizona Route 389.

Using the region’s stunning scenery as backdrops, studios filmed more than 100 movies and many television programs, including the long-running “Gunsmoke,” shot on a permanent set outside of town.

The street fair attracts crowds to vendors’ booths filling three downtown blocks and adjacent areas. Kanab honors many Western stars on its walk of fame, where plaques memorialize many who made movies in the area. Visitors strolling the fair find Western clothing, gifts, fine arts, crafts, jewelry, leather items, home goods and more, including plenty of treats and snacks. Visitors can have breakfast with the stars during the Roundup. Visitors planning to stay overnight or longer during the festival should reserve rooms soon.

The Roundup provides opportunities to meet actors, stunt doubles and others with ties to the movie industry. Plan to dine in the restaurant at the nostalgic Parry Lodge downtown, where photos of Western stars who stayed at the inn line the walls. The Western Legends Roundup appears among the 100 best events in the United States and Canada listed by the bus tour industry, a designation that draws lots of tourists to Kanab. Demonstrated skills include quilting, weaving, spinning, crocheting, knitting, Dutch-oven cooking, blacksmithing, rope making, flint knapping, beading, Western dancing and photography. The event offers opportunities to hone skills or learn some new ones.

Bus tours to nearby outdoor sets are available during the festival. Children’s activities include a junior rodeo and opportunities to throw a rope, sit a saddle, paint a teepee and more. Motorists headed for surrounding attractions such as the Grand Canyon’s North Rim, Lake Powell, Zion, Bryce Canyon National Park or Cedar Breaks National Monument will be routed around Kanab’s Main Street, part of U.S. 89, during the three-day street fair. They find plenty to occupy their time since activities take place all over town during the Roundup’s busy schedule.

Others heading for Main Street downtown might include mounted cowhands hazing Texas longhorn cattle to an exhibit and horse-drawn covered wagons on a trek. Kanab earned the nickname Little Hollywood during the years when studios used the pioneer-era town as a base for stars and crews filming in the area, starting in the 1920s. Kanab boasts many motels, bed-and-breakfast inns, guest ranches, RV parks and nearby access to public and private campgrounds. More of these memorials appear along Kanab’s streets each year.
